Prostate Test

As men get older, they are at increased risk for prostate-related illness. The earliest encounter may occur in younger men in while still in their 30’s; it is known as prostatitis, a painful condition caused by a bacterial infection. With analysis of seminal fluid, prostatitis is easy to diagnose and to treat with antibiotics.

The next most frequently encountered prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), in which the prostate enlarges, usually after age 50, and puts stress on the bladder, often resulting in difficulty with urination. Testing Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels is another way to screen for BPH, and is useful for predicting male pattern baldness. While BPH is a benign condition in men after age 50, this population is also urged to screen for prostate cancer. Almost 200,000 cases of prostate cancer are detected each year in the U.S., and about 40,000 of those men will die because of the cancer.

Fortunately, there are ways to detect your risk of prostate cancer through early blood screening. Prostate cancer often grows very slowly, without causing major problems. Detecting prostate cancer early and treating it may prevent some cancer-related health problems and reduce the risk of dying from the cancer. We offer the standard PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test, as well as the Free-to-Total PSA Ratio, which is a more specific assessment of your body’s risk.

We also offer advanced testing for men who already have prostate cancer. In conjunction with periodic PSA testing, Total Acid Phosphatase and Prostatic Acid Phosphatase levels will help them monitor the progression or stability of their disease.
