Mononucleosis (also called mono) is an illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). A different virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), can cause symptoms similar to mono, but CMV is less common.
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can be found in saliva and mucus and sometimes in tears. EBV is not easily spread. In developed countries, mono is most common in young adults between the ages of 15 and 25. Mono is spread by sharing a drinking glass or eating utensils with an infected person (through sharing saliva). It can also be spread through intimate contact or sharing of saliva. A brief kiss on the lips is not likely to spread EBV. The virus is spread when a person gets someone's infected saliva in his or her mouth. Rarely, EBV is spread through a transfusion with infected blood.
EBV Lab test checks for mono detect antibodies against EBV in a sample of blood. The antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system to fight the infection. Once formed, antibodies usually remain in a person's blood for life.
