LEMS test is conducted to check an autoimmune disorder of neuromuscular transmission. Lambert-Eaton Disease, also known as Myasthenia Gravis or LEMS, is an acquired disease of brain-to-muscle nerve transmission. Its typical symptoms are muscle weakness and fatigue. Lambert-Eaton disease can occur at any age. In women, the disease usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 40 years, while disease onset in men typically occurs later in life.
LEMS test detects the antibodies produced by your immune system (autoantibodies) against acetylcholine receptors in the blood of 90% of patients with general myasthenia gravis and in 55% to 70% of patients with myasthenia of the eyes. These autoantibodies interfere with normal neuromuscular function, causing muscle weakness and fatigue.
Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS) test examines the presence of these antibodies to Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels (VGCC).
