Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE), Serum

Tests For

  • Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE)

Description

Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) levels may be useful in identifying lung, brain and testicular cancer. NSE has been found to be high in all patients studied who had more than three sites of metastatic cancer (metastases). However, the absence of NSE or low levels of NSE cannot rule out cancer. A negative Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) does not mean a person does not have cancer. A high NSE, though, should be considered a “red flag.” Persons with high NSE results should consult their doctor for further evaluation.
