Parathyroid Hormone Related Peptide

Tests For

  • Parathyroid Hormone Related Peptide
  • PTH-related Peptide

Description

Parathyroid hormone tests are conducted to check the serum levels of a hormone secreted by the parathyroid gland in response to low blood calcium levels.

In people with bone cancer, levels of calcium in the blood rise as the cancer breaks down the bone. The cancer cells over-produce Parathyroid Related Peptide as they break down the bone. PTH-related peptide (PTHrP) is the principle mediator of humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy. PTHrP production results in hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia. PTH-rP has been found to be elevated in 50% to 90% of patients with hypercalcemia of malignancy.
