St Louis encephalitis virus infection can cause fever and headache with inflammation of the membranes around the brain or spinal cord. In older people it may be confused with a stroke. This test checks for the presence of antibodies to the virus.

This test should not be used to check for a recent infection, especially if symptoms are present (the patient should see their doctor). This test only checks to see if a person has had the virus in the past.
