Transferrin

Transferrin is an index to nutritional status. It is responsible for 50% to 70% of the iron binding capacity of serum. Transferrin is an iron transport protein receiving and binding iron for delivery to receptors at recipient cells. Transferrin levels rise with iron deficiency and fall in cases of iron overload. Iron (Fe) is a necessary mineral for the proper function of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. It is also needed for proper muscle and organ function.
