Glucagon test helps detect how effectively the pituitary gland is working in regulating the release of growth hormone and cortisol.
A certain type of pancreatic cancer, glucagonoma, may be detected by measuring the levels of glucagon through Glucagon test. Glucagonoma may be present in three different syndromes. The first consists of a characteristic skin rash, blistering redness of the skin, diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance, weight loss, anemia, and venous thrombosis. This form usually shows very high glucagon levels, >1000 pg/mL. The second form is associated with severe diabetes, and the third form with multiple endocrine tumor growth syndrome. This form may have relatively lower glucagon levels.
High levels of glucagon are found in glucagonomas. Currently, over 50% of glucagonomas have metastasized at time of diagnosis.
