A Semen Analysis or sperm test checks the male ejaculate for the following critical factors: volume; how much liquid is in the ejaculate; the condition of the ejaculate; an evaluation of the sperm’s ability to swim; the acid concentration (pH) of the ejaculate; sperm concentration; and how thick the ejaculate fluid is. Each of these factors is important for understanding if there is a problem with the sperm or fluid that may be causing infertility.
This procedure must be scheduled with the laboratory performing the test. Not all of our testing facilities are capable of performing this complex testing. The man should have between 2 and 7 days of sexual abstinence before producing the specimen. For Semen Analysis or Sperm Test, a fresh specimen is required; therefore, this procedure is available only at sperm testing facilities. The World Health Organization experts (WHO) recommend that two ejaculates be evaluated initially. These samples should be collected at least 7 days apart and not more than 3 months apart. If any of the major parameters are abnormal, additional ejaculates should be evaluated.
Testing must begin within 60 minutes of specimen production. In the interim, the specimen should be kept at room temperature, but it is recommended that it be kept close to the body (inside a shirt or coat) to avoid temperature extremes during transport.
