Description

Semen Motility - Sperm motility and quality of motion are arguably the most important indicators of male fertility. They are also the characteristics most adversely affected by delays in getting the semen sample to the lab in time for testing. Consequently, whenever a low motility result is observed (eg, <25%), it is usually advisable to re-test the motility on a sample that is tested immediately after collection.

This procedure must be scheduled with the laboratory performing the Semen Motility test. The man should have between 2 and 7 days of sexual abstinence before producing the specimen. The specimen should be tested as quickly as possible after production.

Semen Motility Testing must begin within 60 minutes of specimen production. In the interim, the specimen is to be kept at room temperature, but it is recommended that it be kept close to the body (inside a shirt or coat) to avoid temperature extremes during transport.
