Myasthenia Gravis

Tests For

  • Myasthenia Gravis

Description

Test for Myasthenia Gravis helps to detect abnormal antibodies. Myasthenia Gravis test may involve Tensilon test, Acetylcholine Receptor Antibodies test and EMG (ElectroMyoGram) test. However, negative results are obtained in most of the cases if the disease is mild or ocular.

Myasthenia Gravis is an acquired disease of brain-to-muscle nerve transmission. It is characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. The disease can occur at any age. In women, the disease usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 40 years, while disease onset in men typically occurs later in life.

Autoantibodies to acetylcholine receptors are detectable in the blood of 90% of patients with general myasthenia gravis and in 55% to 70% of patients with myasthenia of the eyes. These autoantibodies interfere with normal neuromuscular function, causing muscle weakness and fatigue.

Test for Myasthenia Gravis checks for the presence of the antibodies to acetylcholine receptors.
