Prolactin is an important hormone for the female reproductive system. Elevated levels of prolactin are expected during pregnancy. Also, elevated prolactin levels that occur without pregnancy may help to understand why a woman in not having her menstrual period.

Prolactin levels are influenced by the thyroid and estrogen. It is recommended that a thyroid TSH test be performed with prolactin.
